AHEM provides notice of intent to strike as mediation continues

Anoka-Hennepin Education Minnesota (AHEM), the union representing the district's teachers, delivered an official notice of intent to strike to the school district on December 22.

What happens next: State law requires a 10-day “cooling off” period before AHEM can execute a strike. During the “cooling off” period, the parties are able to meet and reach a settlement and avoid a work stoppage. In alignment with the notice provided, AHEM has announced a proposed strike date of Thursday, January 8, 2026. Please understand that AHEM is the entity responsible for calling the strike; this is not an action taken by the school district.

What happens if AHEM executes a strike? Due to legal and staffing reasons, many of the school district operations will need to be immediately suspended in the event of a strike. Please note the following impacts in the event of a work stoppage by AHEM:

  • School is closed. All school sites and regularly scheduled classes will be closed for instruction and regular student transportation routes will not operate.
  • No alternative child-care. Adventures Plus will provide Non-School Day (NSD) care in the event of a strike for a limited number of currently enrolled families only. Adventures Plus families would receive further registration information. Child care is not possible for additional students due to licensing and staffing limitations.
  • Activities and athletics will be immediately suspended. The District has determined that there are not sufficient certified coaches, activities advisors and event staff necessary to safely operate high school activities and be in compliance with Minnesota State High School League requirements at this time. This directive encompasses middle school athletics and activities, as well as all school-based elementary events and activities.
  • Community Education intends to continue a number of programs including adult recreation and enrichment programs, Project Power programs for adults with disabilities, aquatics, preschool screening, and facility rentals.

Working toward an agreement: Even though a strike has been announced, negotiations will continue in mediation and it is possible a strike may be avoided, or delayed to a different date. The District is committed to finding solutions for increasing salary and benefits, and maintaining financial and operational stability within tight budget parameters

Resources and more information: The school district will provide additional information, including a frequently asked questions (FAQ) section at ahschools.us/negotiations. The site will be updated regularly as questions arise.
